          Bucharest is located in the Southern part of the country, in the centre of the Romanian Plain. Bucharest situation is perfect for reaching the Danube (60 km), the Carpathians (100 km) and the Black Sea (250 km).

 

          The capital of Romania has a relatively round shape. The centre (Km 0) is located in one of the main squares, the University Square, and because of that, Bucharest situation has the aspect of a radius to the city limits in all directions.

          Bucharest situation is also related to its six districts. The districts’ situation is also radial and the numbering is made clockwise:

District 1: Băneasa, Pipera, Floreasca

District 2: Pantelimon, Colentina, Iancului, Tei

District 3: Vitan, Titan, Centru Civic

District 4: Berceni, Olteniţei

District 5: Rahova, Ferentari, Cotroceni

District 6: Giuleşti, Drumul Taberei, Militari, Crângaşi

 

          Bucharest is cut by two rivers: Dâmboviţa and Colentina. In addition, there are several lakes that stretch across Bucharest, the most important ones being Lake Floreasca, Lake Tei and Lake Colentina. The center of Bucharest is enriched by Lake Cişmigiu, a small artificial lake in the Cişmigiu Park, a place once frequented by famous poets and writers.

          Bucharest has a surface of 228 square km and it is surrounded by Ilfov County. The regions that surround Bucharest were largely rural, but after 1989 around the city new suburbs were built and the phenomenon is still present. According to the 2002 census, Bucharest has a population of 1,921,751 inhabitants in the city itself and almost 2.3 million inhabitants in the greater metropolitan area.

 

          Bucharest situation is always associated with the tradition of Rome’s seven hills. It is said that Bucharest situation is closely related to the city’s seven hills: Mihai Vodă, Patriarchy Hill, Radu Vodă, Cotroceni, Spirei, Văcăreşti and Sf. Gheorghe Nou.
