Bucharest Chronology

- 1368: Bucharest is recorded as a nameless "citadel on the Dâmboviţa" river.

- 1459, September 20: the name of the city appears for the first time in the history of Bucharest in a document issued from the chancellery of the voivode Vlad Tepes.

- 1702: Constantin Brâncoveanu builds Mogoşoaia Palace, very valuable for its arquitecture.

- 1704: Colţea Hospital is build.

- 1798: Bucharest has 6.006 houses and 30.030 inhabitants.

- 1808: Manus’s Inn (Hanul lui Manuc) is build.

- 1852: takes place the inaugural show of the National Theatre.

- 1854: Cişmigiu Park is inaugurated by the German Ferdinand Lassalle.

- 1857 May: Bucharest is the first city in the world with petrol lamp illumination.

- 1860: the first streets are paved with stone.
- 1862: Bucharest becomes the official capital city of Romania.

- 1869: the first railway station in Bucharest (Filaret - point terminus for Giurgiu-Bucharest route).

- 1869: the University of Bucharest is inaugurated.

- 1871: the first tramway with horses (called “tramcar” in Romanian) from Nord Railway to the Obor Place.

- 1882: the first electrical illumination system, at first at the Royal Palace, then at the National Theatre and in the Cişmigiu garden.

- 1888: the Romania Athenaeum is inaugurated and the building becomes an insignia of Bucharest.

- 1894: the first electric tramway from Cotroceni Boulevard to Obor, among the first ones in Europe.

- 1906: Rome gives Bucharest “The Dam of Rome”, that can be seen today in the Roman Square.

- 1909: the first electric automobile is brought to Bucharest.
- 1909: Volta Cinema is being inaugurated.
- 1921: Băneasa Airport (Aeroportul Băneasa) is brought into operation.

- 1925: the first bus line is inaugurated.
- 1926 February: Bucharest city is divided upon administrative criteria, in a central area with four districts and a periphery area, representing the rest of the territory.

- 1928: the Radio broadcasting studio begins to have regular transmissions.

- 1931: the Society for Airline Transport named “SARTA is founded.

- 1933: is inaugurated the actual calling “Palace of Telephones” (Palatul Telefoanelor).

Bucharest Chronology

- 1936: the Village Museum, among the first ethnographical ones in the world, is inaugurated and the Herăstrău Park is laid out.

- 1938, June 8: in the National Park Carol II (presently Herăstrău) opens its gates the Television Pavilion. The transmissions start at 19 o’clock and each visitor can transmit its own voice and image to a screen, after paying the admission cost.

- 1950: the first cinema studio from Buftea begins its activity and it is considered at the time the biggest and the most modern studio from the South-Est Europe.

- 1951: Dinamo Stadium with a capacity of 20.000 places is inaugurated.

- 1955: in the Vulcan factories it is constructed the first Romanian bus.

- 1956, December 31: on the New Years Eve is broadcasted the first black and white transmission.

- 1961: Globus Circus begins its activity.

Bucharest Chronology

- 1965: Nicolae Ceausescu becomes the Communist Party leader after the death of Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej.

- 1970: the Intercontinental Hotel (the highest building in Bucharest) is being constructed.

- 1977 March: a very strong earthquake kills around 1,500 people in Bucharest.

- 1979: the first metro line from Semanatoarea factories to Timpuri Noi is being inaugurated.

- 1985-86: the austerity program leads to food shortages and widespread power cuts.

- 1989 December: Romania’s bloody revolution that started in Timisoara and involved Bucharest few days later. Ceausescu and his wife Elena are caught and executed on Christmas Day.

- 1991: miners on strike come to Bucharest to protest violently.

- 1994: Bucharest has a new Coat of Arms.

- 1999 January: security forces prevent 10,000 miners striking over pay to enter in Bucharest.

Bucharest Chronology

- 2000: Traian Băsescu is elected the General Mayor of Bucharest.

- 2004: Traian Băsescu is reelected mayor of Bucharest, but he resigns in December in order to become the president of Romania.

- 2005: Adriean Videanu is elected the General Mayor of Bucharest.

- Presently, Bucharest is the first city in Romania in terms of size and importance (economical, political, commercial, cultural-scientific) and one of the greatest cities of the world.
