Bucharest University
Romania has prestigious universities and the Bucharest University is the country’s leading educational and research public institution with more that 300 years of existence. The graduates of Bucharest University are now teachers and researchers at important universities worldwide, members of the Romanian Academy or of the Romanian Parliament, writers, diplomats and even high-ranking ecclesiastical figures.
In November 1989, the Bucharest University had to face an abusive abolition of numerous departments and faculties, remaining with only six faculties and 8,000 students. After the fall of the communist regime in December 1989, Bucharest University entered in a renewal process. Nowadays, the Bucharest University has 18 faculties, more than 20,000 full-time students and almost 3,000 teaching positions.
Bucharest University is well known for having the largest offer of accredited or authorized courses: short and long-duration courses, long-distance learning programs, doctoral and advanced postgraduate programs, courses for professional conversion and perfection. The Bucharest University has undergraduate, graduate, Master of Science, Ph D courses and the good news is that the degrees awarded by the Bucharest University are recognized in most countries.
Bucharest University is an important centre of scientific research. It has more than 50 institutes, departments and research centers, some working in collaboration with similar centers from other countries and some being recognized as excellence centers at the European level. The development of international collaboration is also achieved through more than 100 bilateral agreements with worldwide universities. Bucharest University has a thousand students benefiting from trainings or specialized studies in Western Europe, United States, Canada, Japan in academic and research programs like Erasmus, Lingua, Naric, Leonardo da Vinci, UNICA, AMOS, TEMPRA etc. In addition, a significant number of Bucharest University teachers are invited abroad as associated professors or visitors, for research or for scientific cooperation purposes.
For foreign students who come to Romania, Bucharest University organizes every year, at Sinaia, summer courses on Romanian language and civilization. During the academic year, almost 1000 foreign undergraduate and postgraduate students study at Bucharest University and 10% of them attend doctoral studies.
