Bucharest Henri Coandă Airport

The international Bucharest Henri Coandă Airport is located 10 miles (16km) north of Bucharest and 30 minute drive from the city centre. Known until 2004 as Otopeni International Airport, it has the headquarters in Otopeni, Ilfov County. The Bucharest Henri Coandă Airport assures the fluency of passengers and cargo traffic and is the place where all international flights land.

In the Bucharest Henri Coandă Airport travelers can find banks, bars and restaurants. But the way to the city center is also covered by the 783 bus which stops underneath the arrivals hall, in front of the internal flights terminal every 30 minutes and the tickets cost 4.00 lei (valid for two trips). History

The current location of Bucharest Henri Coandă Airport was between 1940 and 1944 a military base of the 3^rd Reich. After the Second World War, the infrastructure was used by the Romanian military aviation until 1965. But the increase of the air traffic, provided until then by Băneasa Airport, asked for a new airport and that was the point were the modernization of the Bucharest Henri Coandă Airport begun. In 1970, the passengers terminal with a capacity of handling 1,2 million passengers per year was inaugurated.

In 1991, the Bucharest Henri Coandă Airport started an important investment program, the "BOIA Development and Modernization" and six years later the International Departures Terminal with a capacity of processing 1200 passengers per peak hour was inaugurated. In 2000 it was the turn of the International Arrivals passengers flow to be officially opened.

Since 2001, the Bucharest Henri Coandă Airport has a parking corresponding to the Arrivals Terminal with 3 levels and 900 places and since 2003 it has a Domestic Flights Terminal, with a capacity of 200 passengers/peak hour.

In 2004 the airport changed its name from Otopeni International Airport to Bucharest Henri Coandă Airport, after the name of the famous Romanian pioneer of aviation, Henri Coandă. Henri Coandă is now becoming famous for his fundamental aerodynamic theory that lays at the base of the flying saucer concept. This Romanian aerodynamicist discovered that a steam of air emerging from a nozzle has a tendency to follow the nearby curved surface, if that surface or angle the surface is not too sharp.
