History

The first flights in Bucharest Băneasa Airport area were flown in 1909 by Louis Bleriot who used one of his hippodromes. One year later Bucharest was the host of the first international aircraft meeting of Romania and of Eastern Europe.

After 1912 the airdrome became an airport. The aeronautic activities diversified and in 1922 the first international airline crossing Europe to Asia took place on the route Paris- Strasbourg- Prague- Vienna- Bucharest (Băneasa Airport)- Constantinopole.

The first air flight at night occurred in 1923 on the route Bucharest (Băneasa Airport)- Belgrade- Bucharest (Băneasa Airport). Internal and international commercial air routes were officially opened between 1925 and 1929: Bucharest (Băneasa Airport)- Galaţi- Chişinău, Bucharest (Băneasa Airport)- Iaşi-Cernăuţi, Bucharest (Băneasa Airport)- Cluj Napoca, Bucharest (Băneasa Airport) -Constanţa. The first business aviation flight was performed in 1926, when a Romanian businessman paid 1800 lei in order to fly from Brăila to Galaţi to conclude a business.

Between the two World Wars the international air shows and the attempts of breaking the world records were based at the Bucharest Băneasa Airport. The airport was developing and modernizing and between 1932 and 1937 it expanded its area and personnel. Bucharest Băneasa Airport was the only airport open to international air traffic until the Otopeni Airport was opened, after 1965.

Currently, the International Bucharest Băneasa Airport is undergoing a complete modernization program as a consequence of the low cost companies burst that prefer the use of less concurred airports, with moderate to affordable tax airports fares like the Romanian low costs Blue Air and Carpatair or My Air, the Italian airline, also a cheap flight company.
