Bucharest Steaua began as a military club on the 7th of June 1947, following to a decree of the National Ministry of Defense of Romania. It took the name of ASA (Army Sport Association) and in the same year it played in the first Romanian League. After several names, in 1961 the club received the name of Bucharest Steaua (The Star in English).

The first leader of the Bucharest Steaua football team was also its skipper, Stefan Septville and the first coach was Coloman Braun-Bogdan. Bucharest Steaua won the first domestic title very quickly, in 1951, under the helmet of Gheorghe Popescu, now honorary founding member. Until 1961, Bucharest Steaua won five more domestic titles.

Promoting the skillful, free flowing and spectacular football, Bucharest Steaua received the name of “The Speedsters” for the mid 80’s team. On May, 1986, Bucharest Steaua, coached by Emerich Jenei, became the first Eastern European club to win the European Championships Cup, the highest trophy of the European Football. In the late 1980’s Bucharest Steaua played an extraordinary world-record: 104 games without defeat in three successive Romanian league seasons and more than three years.

In the 90’s, Bucharest Steaua won the domestic championship of Romania six times and represented the country three times in a row in the UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE competition. Currently Bucharest Steaua is the winner of more domestic championships, cups and Romanian super cups than any other team in our country, despite the powerful city rivals Bucharest Dinamo and Bucharest Rapid. Bucharest Steaua had the opportunity of reaching the UEFA Cup final in 2006, but the team lost to Middlesborough 4-3 on aggregate, despite the three goals advantage.

With 22 domestic titles, 20 National Cups and 4 Romania’s Super cups won, Bucharest Steaua has been the most popular football club in Romania. Among the football players that wear the red and blue shirts of Bucharest Steaua, Anghel Iordanescu, Gheorghe Constantin, Victor Piturca, Florea Voinea, Marius Mihai Lacatus, Gheorghe Hagi were well known as the goal scorers, Toma, Voinescu, Iordache or Duckadam as brilliant goal keepers and Zavoda, Halmageanu, Sames, Szathmari, Iovan or Belodedici as slick defenders.           Bucharest Steaua has its own stadium, one of the most fancy football arenas in Romania. Ghencea stadium is a typical football only ground, with no athletic track, fully refurbished in 1996. It has 28.000 seats and a closed circuit surveillance system.
