Bucharest is known as the city of parks and gardens. Apart from the agitated life and crowded streets, the Bucharest parks represent a real oasis that gathers many people coming here for a walk and some fresh air. Surrounded by lakes and forests, the Bucharest parks are very attractive, especially in the week-ends.
The most important Bucharest parks are: Herăstrău, covering 187 hectares, Cişmigiu (13 hectares), Youth's Park (20 hectares) and Carol Park (36 hectares).

The Herăstrău Park is one of the most beautiful Bucharest parks and certainly the biggest one in the capital of Romania. Located in the North of the city and surrounded by the finest residential districts of Bucharest, Herăstrău Park is placed on the both banks of the Herăstrău Lake (77 hectares). The park was created between 1936 and 1939 and today is a perfect playground for children and a nice place where adults can relax. The park is divided in two parts: one for rest and culture (where the Elisabeta Palace, the summer theatre and the wharf can be found) and one for sports and amusements. Some of the Herăstrău Park attractions include: Expoflora zone with floral decors, the Roses Island, the Japanese Garden and the Village Museum.

One of the famous and crowed Bucharest parks is Cişmigiu. Located in the center of Bucharest, across the City Hall, Cişmigiu Park was once far greater that it is today. The project for the Cişmigiu Park, made by the Viennese landscape architect Friederich Wilhelm Meyer in 1830, transformed a swamp in a veritable jewel, with beautiful paths and more than 30 000 indigenous trees, artificial grottoes, floral carpets and bridges. Sometimes referred to as the Cişmigiu garden, the park is a constant attraction for both local people and foreign visitors.

Carol I Park, also known as the Liberty Park, is one of the Bucharest parks laid out by the authorities in the beginning of the 20th century. Designed by the French landscape artist Eduard Redont, Carol Park is today preferred because of the walks along tree-lined paths and the good view of central. The park is dominated by the massive Monument to the Heroes of the Struggle for Freedom and Socialism that housed until 1990 the remains of communist leaders Gheorge Gheorghiu-Dej and Petre Groza. Nearby there are the Rumanian arenas, The Museum of Technology and Astronomic Observatory.
The Youth's Park, located in the Southeastern part of Bucharest, is famous for its lake and for the Polyvalent Hall where sport contests, concerts and performances take place. Here festivals and music concerts are very popular and frequent. And as the name says, the Youth's Park is the place where young people gather around for a good time.

Although it is not really one of the Bucharest parks, we should also mention the Botanical Garden, the largest one in Romania. The garden has an area of over 17 hectares and more than 10,000 species of plants from all the continents: exotic, decorative, aquatic, decorative plants and herbs. The Botanical Garden is organized in outdoor gardens and indoor gardens. The rare plants district, the Mediterranean flora district, the Italian district, the Carpathian Mountains district or the roses district are some of its attractions.
In Bucharest, parks can be found also in the districts. Preferred for the everyday walks of the children, this Bucharest parks, smaller than Herăstrău or Cişmigiu, are nice places to spend time.
